    Quintett light with W 170 S

    Hello

I am from Sweden so I write in English hope it is ok. (I dont speak German)

I am planning to build the Quintett light.
I would like to use the W 170 S as bass drivers instead of the originally designed W 130 S. Would the W 170 S work as a midrange driver or should I use four W 170 S as bass drivers and keep the W 130 S as midrange driver?

Do you have any idea what have to be changed to build this speaker with the W 170 S?

    Filter design?
    Cabinet volume?
    Bass port length and diameter?

I would be very grateful for any guidance you can give me to make this Project turn out as good as possible.

    Best Regards from Sweden
    Jonny

Sorry, you're not planning to build Quintett light. You are developing a new loudspeaker.
W170s will not perform better in midrange. I would keep W130s.
The box will get a wider front. Baffle step compensation will change, this may cause changes of the filter network.
W170s will need more cabinet volume and the filter between bass and midrange will change.
If you know the tool boxsim, you can download the project file and change it to W170s. Try to reach a similar frequency response like the original Quintett light and the simulation should fit. Upload the changed file and we will help you.
Please specify, why you want to use W170s. Deeper bass, a raise of sensitivity or a higher maximum volume?

    Cheers, Dirk

      Hello Dirk

      Thank you for your reply.
Yes I guess you are right I am not building the Quintett light!
I really like the design but would like to get bit deeper bass and higher volume.

I have not worked with this program Before so I did my best.
I have changed the four woofers to W170S but keep the midrange as W130S as you recommended.

I have changed the drivers in the program. per my calculation each woofer get about 17,5 litre each.

I have not made any Changes to the port length or diameter and no Changes are made to the filter.

I would really appreciate if you would like to help me to tweak this design and hopefully make it work.

      Best Regards
      Jonny

        Hello Johnny

        the simulation looks okay,
except the ports tuning frequency should be about 32Hz
        due to the bigger housing.

Max volume and bass range are indeed a little bit better.

        Sincerly,
        Alexander

          Hello Sandman and Dirk

First of all I must say that I am thankful for your help!!

I have made one change since the last Project file and that is to narrow the cabinet to 20cm instead of 21cm as Before. (really would like to keep the slim shape as much as possible).

Per my calculations this gives every woofer approx. 16,25 litre.
I have changed the port tuning to 32hz as you recommended sandman. (what would be the appropriate port dim. to get this tuning?

Do you see anything else you would recommend changing?

I have upploded the new Project file with the new box dim. and port tuning.

Again thank you for your help!

            Hi Johnny,

the port(s) is twice the BR25.50 like in the original Quintett Light.

            Sincerly,
            Alexander

              Hi Alexander

Ok I thought I needed to change the dimensions to get the right port tuning?
As you might have notice I am some what of a beginner in the diy speaker area.
I buildt a simple two way kit speaker a few years ago.

This is my first "bigger" project so please bare with me and I guess sometimes obvious questions.
I really apreciate your help and trying to learn as much as possible!

Is there any other areas in this design that you think need to be adressed?
Is there anything in the crossover that needs to change for the w170s drivers?

              Best regards
              Jonny

                Hi Jonny,

the recommended 16l for each W170S will not perform very good! This driver needs a much bigger volume to work well in BR cabinets. If you really want to get more (and deeper) bass think about the double volume, otherwise you only get more kick bass.

I have simulated the Quintett light with the tool AJHorn:
first picture shows the original Quintett light with four W130S in 51 liters (black, tuning to 42Hz) vs. four W170S in 65l (red, tuning to 38Hz).
second picture shows the four W130S vs. four W170S in 130l, tuning to 28Hz.
BR ports are always the pair of BR25.50!

                best regards Ralf
